Africa’s EV Readiness Ranking

Africa’s transition to electric vehicles (EVs) varies significantly across regions and countries. Based on EV readiness scores, Egypt leads the continent with a score of 0.5611, followed by Kenya (0.5238) and Rwanda (0.5063). North Africa ranks as the most EV-ready region with an average score of 0.4248, while West Africa lags behind at 0.2153. The overall EV readiness average for Africa stands at 0.3089, highlighting both progress and the need for further development in EV infrastructure across the continent.

Managing Director

Managing Director, Africa E-Mobility Alliance (AfEMA), leads policy advocacy and research to advance e-mobility in Africa. 

Spearheaded Africa’s largest E-Mobility Data Portal and the Charge Africa MoU, securing key partnerships and policy reforms. Previously co-founded ARC Ride Kenya’s operations, scaling EV assembly and securing tax reductions. 

A published researcher, featured in CNN, Xinhua, and The East African. Holds a Bachelor’s in Chemical & Process Engineering from Moi University.

Tom Courtright

Research Director

Leading e-mobility expert and Research Director at the Africa E-Mobility Alliance, with a background in International Relations, Journalism, Urban Planning, and Sustainability. 

Extensive experience across Africa, the Pacific, and Latin America, working in e-mobility in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Malawi. Consulted for the World Bank, UNEP, and GIZ. 

Currently pursuing a PhD at the University of Cape Town, focusing on motorcycle taxis and accessibility in East Africa.

Sarah Bitamazire

Senior Operations Associate

Sarah Bitamazire is Senior Operations Associate at the Africa E-Mobility Alliance (AfEMA), where she drives operational efficiency and stakeholder coordination for sustainable transportation initiatives across the continent.

With a multilingual background and experience spanning diplomatic missions, policy development, and international organizations, Sarah brings strategic vision and implementation expertise to complex cross-cultural environments. 

Previously Chief Policy Officer at Lumiera and Political Advisor at the Swedish Parliament, her experience in the DRC, Sudan, and Europe informs her approach to operational leadership. Sarah holds a Master of Laws from Uppsala University specializing in International Human Rights Law.

Lisa Amenya

Chief Convenor

Environmental scientist with expertise in sustainable development, impact assessments, and project management. 

Experienced in developing sustainability strategies, conducting research, and collaborating with stakeholders to implement effective environmental solutions. 

Skilled in data analysis, policy development, and community engagement, with a focus on promoting green technologies and advocating for policies that support environmental sustainability. Holds a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science and committed to continuous learning and professional development.

Tahir Said

Senior Research Associate

Leading e-mobility and policy expert, currently a Senior Research Associate at the Africa E-Mobility Alliance, with a background in Economic Public Policy, Econometric Studies, and Political Economy. 

Extensive experience in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Malawi, including pioneering e-mobility in Malawi for the World Bank and developing gender-transformative e-mobility policy recommendations for UNEP.

Expert in electric vehicle initiatives, policy analysis, and advancing sustainable energy transitions in Africa.

Mercy Mutai

Communications Associate

Communications Associate, Africa E-Mobility Alliance (AfEMA). Versatile communication specialist with expertise in content strategy, SEO, media relations, and storytelling across multiple industries. 

Skilled in developing high-impact content, managing digital platforms, and crafting compelling narratives that drive engagement and visibility.

Previously served as Alumni Relations Executive at Hekima University College and Communication Assistant at Sasa Media Services, leading social media management, email marketing, and editorial projects. 

A freelance writer for Daily Nation and Standard Newspaper, covering diverse topics, including gender, development, and sustainability. She holds a Master’s in Development Communication from the University of Nairobi and a Bachelor’s in Linguistics, Media, and Communication from Rongo University.

Bob Wesonga

Vincent Kiprono

Finance Officer

Vincent is a results-driven finance professional with expertise in financial planning, tax management, audit processes, and risk assessment. 

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Finance and is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Currently serving as Finance Manager at Africa E-Mobility Alliance (AFEMA), he oversees financial operations, budgeting, and compliance. 

Previously, he was a Company Manager at Associate Consulting Africa Ltd. With a strong background in financial forecasting, tax planning, and risk management, Vincent is dedicated to driving financial efficiency and supporting organizational growth in dynamic business environments.
