KeEBI Battery Stock and Retirement Outlook Report

The Africa E-Mobility Alliance (AfEMA), through the Kenya E-Mobility Battery Initiative (KeEBI) and with support from the ClimateWorks Foundation, is pleased to publish Kenya’s EV Battery Stock and Retirement Outlook Report. Drawing on NTSA registration data and cohort-based modelling, the report estimates Kenya’s installed EV battery stock at 176.7 MWh and projects 173.7 MWh of near-term retirements by 2033, peaking at 84 MWh in 2030, with two-wheelers accounting for 82–87% of flows. It finds that LFP batteries make up 47% of capacity, with about 109.6 MWh suitable for repurposing, and long-term potential of up to 223 GWh end-of-first-life capacity by 2050, USD 8.9 billion in residual value, and USD 44 million in annual recycling revenues. The report offers actionable recommendations for policy, infrastructure, data, and investment to build a circular EV battery economy in Kenya.
